The train station was so large as to contain its own weather — a weather of high marble walls that held the same chill in winter and in summer  — the weather of a concrete vault so massive as to have become the sky, beneath whose distance, dim-lit curve a fog seemed to gather.  Above all, it was the weather of echoes — all sounds hollowed and shattered so that words got lost and yet continued sounding long after those who spoke them had taken their trains and gone.

Above the colonnade that buttressed these marble walls, at the point where the concrete vault launched into the void, giant stone warriors encircled the waiting room.  They stood at intervals, naked, staring sternly ahead.  Each warrior held a shielded in front of his sex.
